Had to terminate some swa so thought I'd snap shot each step, seen as the question was asked on how to terminate the stuff.

Only 4mm 3c so fill yer boots......

Put boot & clench nut onto cable (Tip: use tape to hold clear of work area).

Mark where you want to terminate the swa with tape.

Use a hacksaw & score the armour, using the tape as a guide.

Use a knife & strip the outer sheath.

3-M107-How-to-terminate-make-off-SWA-talkelectricianforumcouk-1.jpg

Bend the armour back & forth (tip: small groups & bend at 90deg to the score) until the strands snap off.

Score the inner sheath bend back & forth until it splits & seperates, pull clear (Tip:twisting clock wise while pulling it will come off easier).

Hold cable cores & rotate this will push out & flair the armour strands.

Many thanks for the refresher matey!

Tell you what, i hope to get as neat as that with my wireing eventuly.

thanks for that,,, not done it in a while

question.....

do you guys always have the end stuff already located (in this case the cu) ?????

i have previously 'made off' then located to the box

think i may have made hard work off it !!!!!!

depends. sometimes put gland onto cable, then into enclosure then locknut. other times glad is fitted to enclosure, then SWA into that

you dont really have a choice when your going into a galv box etc though

Nice little thread.

I do the same with the tape to hold it together but use a adjustable plumbers pipe cutter to roll round the armoured to create a score in the steel wire then do the bending, works really well, stops you sawing your fingers off.

Photos 7&8, usually the part of making off an SWA gland that drives ma bananas! Very rarely that inner sheath comes off easily. It's usually moulded into the cores and won't pull off!

cheap swa. it has no or very little chalk in

Top post once again M107, very tidy work .... I always use external glands with the olive , I think they get a better bite on the armoured.

Cheers

Ste

I have one used it a couple of times (it is probably in the bottom of the tool bag) but old habbits die hard & for those still learning the trade it doesnt hurt to know how to do it the old way.....just incase you cant find the bladerunner thingy.

Hi there

Am a student lecky and was wondering did you wire the swa straight to the MCB with no connector block in an adaptable box?. And just checking, I'm using 4mm swa and I need to connect to a 32A mcb?

I watched a really good tip the other day on you tube for doing this. Buy your self a plumbers copper tubing cutter put that around the swa and turn it whilst righting it leaves perfect termination of the steel armoured.

Blade runner only works on the small cables so I would advice using the hack saw.

Also if your terminating the swa and it has a bend in it then bend it first and then follow the steps above :D

Good post

:D
