Hey patch,

im posting this for my sister :D

she has a persian cat called lola, 3 years old sister has had her since 10 weeks old

the past 6 months lola has been pulling her own fur out :S from her neck to her tail she is now bald (looks more like a sphinx cat now)

she has also lost alot of weight

sister has kept upto date with her jabs, and she has regular vet checks.

upon 1st noticing the issues my sister took her to the vets who performed blood tests and also prescribed frontline as he beleived that the issue was down to fleas (some flea eggs wher present at time) and to also bathe her in DETTOL (i advised sister not to do this)

she sorted out the flea issue and also treated her for worms

the blood tests came back negative for anything

my sister not feeling confident in the vet sought a 2nd opinion from PDSA

again blood tests and various other tests all came back negative :S

she has began to gain weight again slowly but surely but there is no sign of the fur returning, the skin is pink and healthy no signs of any irritation and no broken skin anywhere.

Any suggestions or ideas as to what to ask the vet to test for or how to help her regain her fur?

otherwise she is a happy little kitty :D

Additional Note: She has been spayed

MMM. Would never suggest bathing a cat in Dettol!

There are a number of issues here. Is the cat insured? If so referral to a dermatologist may be useful.

The vet was correct in treating for fleas first - it is easier just to rule them out. If no money to refer then the option exists to have a vet take some skin biopsies that can give a lot of useful information. Furthermore allergy testing is available either as skin tests or specialist bloods. So many options. It also depends what the blood tests already carried out were - was the thyroid checked?

Hey patch

Kitty is insured :)

I shall tell me sis to ask for a skin biopsy and ask for a referral to a dermatologist

As far as im aware so far they have tested thyroid, FIV, LFT, diabetes??

White blood cell count,

When my sister told me abt the vet telling her to bathe her in dettol I advised against this also as it was of my opinion that this would do more harm then good!

Thanks for the help patch

Hey patch and everyone else

Now got a possible cause for the above Vet had announced it could possibly be

Congenital Hypotrichosis

He said it may have lain dormant but something has triggered this off!

Skin biopsys and further blood tests been taken along with soft tissue X-ray and skeletal X-ray!

She is also under referral to dermatologist

he has said it may get to the point the fur will also begin to fall out of her head aswell if it is this condition he believes

:)

:slap

Apache , you need a life!

no, but I do have a quantity of hessian sacks kicking about, and next door have recently knocked down a little wall.! :D

Hey again patch,

Vet has finally given my sister a full diagnosis with the cat

it is Congenital Hypotrichosis

he thinks that the flea issue may have triggered off some inflammatory issues which triggered off the problem

he has also said there is very little chance of the fur returning :(

he has prescribed some ointment for her skin to stop this becomming severely inflamed or irritated

she is regaining weight slowly

thanks for ur help :D

oh and p.s steps i know what solution that you where referring to and it wont be happening not to lola anyways
