Alliance promotes German-Norwegian electricity trade 13.06.2013: Various companies, associations and non-governmental organizations from Germany and Norway have called for closer cooperation between the two countries on the subject of energy reform. Among others, system operators TenneT and 50 Hertz, as well as the organizations Brot für die Welt and the Federal Association for Renewable Energies, are among the companies calling for closer cooperation, especially in regard electricity trading. In times of high wind and solar energy production, Germany could export electricity to Norway, enabling Norway to retain water near its hydro plants. In times with little wind and sun, Norway could use its conserved water to generate hydro electricity, which could then be exported to Germany. To make this possible, TenneT explained, the countries are laying two submarine cables for energy transmission – the cables are expected to be operational in 2018. © PHOTON

Now if I remember rightly, parts of Scotland are closer to Norway than London....

produce and export enough electricity so they can have enough power to send it back again?

This "target driven" world we live in forces this.

We have to have a certain % of "renewable" generation.  But when the wind doesn't blow, you need to import it from somewhere else.

think inthis case they have realised they generating more than they can use, ergo need to do something useful with it. Just love the idea of cooperation between countries to benefit both, let alone having the sense to go do something like this. Imagine if the UK installed pV like the Germans, like every factory roof, and then pumped water uphill in a place like Scotland or Wales. Actually maybe don't imagine that, it would end in arguments :slap

That would depend on the outcome of next years independence referendum

We are in the process of building a pumped storage scheme above Loch Ness.
