This is mostly for the plumbers who think its a good idea to make a notch half the depth of the joist so they can get all their pipes in any only take up 1 board.... but other may still find it useful

there is also a distance from the wall, max distance you can notch .. i thought it was a metre or so ..
i guess it depends how long the joist is.

its partly explained in the pic (the 0.1-0.2 of span etc). not very clear when you first look at it tho (at least i think it is?)
