All people know that a solar energy system produces usable power from sunshine. But I want to know that does solar only work on warm days. It is possible without the energy of  the sun or not?

OK, there is anew generation of solar thermodynamic panels for generating hot water, these wotk like air-conditioning in reverse, will work at night, and at temperatures down to -5 C. They work by heat differential, hence don't need sun, but work a lot better if in the sun and during daylight hours, basically beacuse there's lots more free heat available.

It is not as big as a Suez searchlight.  They could be four feet

in diameter and powered by a carbon arc.

Still impressive though.

mine was working today, rain, heavy cloud cover, blowing  a gale. The panels work off infra red anyway, and even on a dull day they will generate, not a lot, but they will still work. The advantage of living in a wet area, is that the rain does help keep the panels clean by washing dust off, plus when the sun does come out, the air is cleaner as it is also free from dust, so the best generation tends to happen after a rainy day
