Recommend A Dvd Player Anyone ?

We have a Samsung DVD  player with surround sound   which has been fine  except for deciding NOT to play half of our DVDs  once .

Local repair man re-tracked the laser £40  and all was fine .  

Now its started doing it again .......checked the ones that don't play on the 14"  built-in and they play on that . 

Thinking its cheaper to kick it into touch ,  what  would guys recommend ....................surround sound DVD player .

What are these DVDs you speak of???

I seem to rember the cheapo small DVD players with funny names are just DVD drives in a box with no region nonsense so maybe try one of those?

I bought a Toshiba one a couple of years ago... It's only basic, but then it only cost £35.... Used it probably only two or three times since...

Unless you have some specific feature requirements then pretty much anything would be fine. It's hard to keep up with who builds what and puts it in which box these days so any advice is soon out of date.

Missus buys box set of Downtown Abbey , get to disc 4  and it just pixilates , play it on TV with built in player, no problem.

Same with New Tricks original cast    , one disc won't play all the others  fine .

You can probably get a matshita for a tenner?

what make is the TV/DVD combo? Try that?

Its a Sharp  DVD combo , small screen , will play anything TBH .    The other one puts out surround sound etc .    Its been in before for this problem . guy says he re-aligned the laser ...it worked anyway ...had a pile of DVDs that wouldn't play . 

How old is the DVD player?  Less than  year old, get a direct replacement as it will be under guarantee.

If less than 5 years in Scotland, and 6 years England and Wales you are covered by SOGA. Sale Of Goods Act.

You may have to go small claims court.  Sounds excessive?

You may also need a report from an expert saying that your product should not have failed within the 5-6 years. A second opinion if you will.

When you get to court, most times the defending company will buckle.

If they lose, then they have made a rod for their own back, and may let many others use your court case as a precedent.

Very good and powerful consumer tool - more so for more expensive items such as cars etc.

You may have noticed a lot of companies offering 5 year guarantees - this is because more and more people are becoming aware of SOGA.

Otherwise - a cheapo all region DVD player will do the job.  You gets what you pay for.
