I wonder if anyone can help me. I have just bought a nearly new cooker, ( it was returned to shop as was to complicated for previouse people was fully tested before bought so got it for a good price)and had a electrician install it today. But it's not working.

The cooker is A AEG 493321i MN freestanding cooker with induction hob and double oven.

When you switch it on the display comes on but shows. error code E8. Then it shows child lock on. I press unlock and then next to two of the ring indicators it shows E which according to instructions means malfunction.

You can adjust temperature on other 2 rings but they don't switch on or get pan hot. ( I am using correct type of pans for induction Hob).

On the oven side the clock flashes but you can't set it as pressing buttons does nothing and ovens don't switch on.

The Weird thing is the fan is continually running with ovens switched off.

It seems like electricity is only getting to display and fan as none of rings or ovens will swich on.

I have googled E8 and it mentions this means a connection or loose wire problem.

What could be wrong with cooker, could it be the electrician did not wire cooker properly. Or do you think cooker is broken.

I have contacted electrician but he is refusing to come back unless I pay again.

I can't afford to pay for another electrician to come out.

Is there any thing that can be done to get it working, as really need it working as have 4 young children and need to be able too cook for them.

Also is it worth me contacting AEG.

Would it help if I posted some pictures of wiring at back of cooker.

Any advice much appreciated, thanks in advance.

If I install a cooker I make sure It works before I run away.

And yes sometimes I do actually run!

If it doesn't work then I tell the customer.

sometimes they won't work unless you put them in manual mode and the clock is set?

E8 indicates a communication problem inside the appliance.

The service manual states "Communication/wiring Induction modules to User interface interrupted.

Centre wire of RAST2.5 plug defect.

Or right Induction module defect or no mains supply.

(always if only both right zones with Alarm)

Basically, there's no communication between the induction module and the user interface.

You would need to check the wiring between the user interface and the induction module to ensure it's ok.

If it is, you would then need to ensure that the induction module has a power supply to it.

You have purchased a cooker described to be in working order from a shop..

If the item purchased is not as described then you have rights to a refund, replacement, repair at their expense,

The electrician was just asked to come and connect some goods he/she did not supply..

they have no legal responsibilities or duty to ensure all functions of the cooker are working correctly..

the fact that there is power to the appliance (as displays do light up) confirms that a connection has been made.. 

So I can understand the electricians reluctance to come and re investigate what is probably someone else's fault free of charge.

The grey area in your scenario IMHO is that as you describe the item as previously owned..

How was it transported from the shop to your home??

did it have appropriate protection against bumps and knocks in  transit?

i.e. could it have been damaged internally by you or another third party while getting it into your home?

In which case the shop would say  its not their problem!

Unless the shop delivered it for you it could be a tricky one to prove / resolve?

Take it back to the shop / ask them to come out and take it back.

I presume you did not see it working in the shop?

If you want it fixed / repaired then an electrician is not the answer (sorry guys) you need a dedicated appliance repair person, best call the AEG service centre 08445 610 643* or 03445 610 643** calls cost 5p / min from a BT line

I would take it back to the shop, since AEG will not come out  / repair it for free, who knows what it will cost.

 
Hum.... if AEG won't cover it as a warranty call , do check their call out fees as they won't be cheap.

I think your first port of call is the shop you bought it from - it sounds like it is faulty so I'd be suggesting that a full refund is in order as its not working ( and presumably you were sold it as "working order")

Be prepared to remove it from your kitchen!

Doesn't matter how much was paid, it was paid for, and sold as working. I still say take it back / get the shop to come out.

I am also thinking, if its like this now what will it be like when it really gets a problem, I have always figured AEG over complicate things.

Not strictly true Richard, but generally perhaps.

I do more business fixing equipment much more complex than domestic appliances than I do installing electrical systems to BS7671.

I've asked this because you can get some surprsingly cheap cookers these days, so a new cheap one with a proper guarantee may be a better bet for the OP.

I have spoken to shop and they say it is under warrent and still has most of its 5 year warrenty. They say to Phone AEG and they should be able to send someone out to fix under warrenty. They said if for any reason they won't fix under warrent they will pay for the repair.

I don't think AEG work on Sunday's so will have to phone them tomorrow.

I paid £550 for cooker, full price in currys it is £999. Do you think it is worth getting fixed or should I just return it. I don't think I'll find another one at that price. Does warrenty pass from one buyer to next. Shop says it does.

which is where I think your issues may start. A quick online search shows £789 as the best price so a £550 price tag suggests its definitely 2nd hand!

Right - so when you call AEG clarify their costs before you agree to them attending your home, and then ring around looking for a local appliance specialist and check their prices too.

You could have bought a brand new free standing electric cooker for the amount you paid for the 2nd hand unit.

So get the shop to refund you and buy a new one would be my recommendation

 
Show me a freestanding cooker with induction hob brand new with warranty for £550. You can't . I don't want a cheap electric cooker. I need a electric cooker with induction hobs for safety reason. As have adults with medical conditions and special needs living in house.a cheap electric cooker or gas cooker are not a option as would not be safe.

That is why I wanted this model.

I did not post my original question just for people to have ago at me for not buying a brand new cooker. I was looking for advice. On what the problem could be. I guess maybe ive come to the wrong forum.

I'll phone AEG in the morning and see what they say. What ever the cost of repair shop has said they will pay the bill.

I hate to say this, but I don't think the warranty is transferable, I base this on the fact it seems you have to register the appliance within 30 days of delivery to qualify for the 5 year warranty, since its second hand (I have no problem with that) the 30 days has probably expired.

I would also ask the shop to put in writing the fact that they told you they will pay the bill if you call out AEG, you don't want a bill and then have the shop say they refuse to pay it.

On a personal note: I am sorry if you think you are being "poorly treated" on this forum, but it is an electrician's forum, and in today's age just because it uses electricity does not mean an a electrician can fix it. Appliances for one thing have become too specialised, and as such require a dedicated person to fix said item.

I can only wish you luck. :)

 
Well it's simple isn't it?

If they say it has most of a 5 year warranty left, then get AEG out to fix it.

Only if that fails, i.e they can't fix it or refuse to honour the warranty for some reason do you need to think about demanding a refund.

 
did you  purchase it from a national [ie, like currys] , or a small independent?

if it was a national I'd kick up a stink with them, and get them to arrange for AEG to attend, then the bill is deffo their problem.

 
If it's any benefit, at the main power inlet on these units there are power links (can't quite remember if it's two or three) that have to be in place. If one is loose or missing it can cause problems. Also, if the link cable between the controls (AEG call it user interface) to the hob is loose it can throw up errors.

I know you can't check this personally but the problem might not be too serious.
