Just had a new free standing cooker installed and the person installing has deemed it unsafe as ther is the electric socket above which is from the top of the socket 75cm. Is this okay or should it be moved. Thank you

You shouldn't really have a socket actually behind the cooker.

Could he not just replace it with a blank plate? that's by far the simplest solution.

I presume it's been there all along even with your old cooker and you just didn't use it?

Thank you. It has been there for over 10 years, apparently the cooker switch has got to be on. So they say.

Does it look something like this?

No it doesn't it is a very old socket with just the cooker light and a socket to put the extractor plug in. It' s yellows with red switches

I am sure it needs moving. Or the cooker needs moving to one side or the other.

Most cookers have a minimum distance above to combustible surfaces, gas cookers usually have a greater minimum distance than electric ones. From the information that has been given so far, it is just possible that the bottom of the faceplate (and the cable from the plug) is above the minimum distance stated in the cooker's installation instructions.

But there would be a lot of steam being produced from pans on the hob, which could condense onto and into the socket outlet so it is not a good idea to have any electrical apparatus directly above it. Except for an extractor fan which should be designed with steam in mind, and would have it's own minimum distance specified.

A picture might be good of the area.

Also is the fitting yellow because it has become discoloured? Was it originally white? Did the installer refuse to connect it?

Thank you for comments. The answers to your questions are no it gas always been that colour and no the installer didn't refuse but said it was unsafe and stated about the steam as you have.

You mean "has"? :)

Not sure if you are allowed to post pictures or links, perhaps a mod will allow you to. But a pic would be good of the area.

Can the cooker be moved to the side? Are there cupboards?

Obviously got gas on the brain. There are cupboards but thinking of having the kitchen refitted so maybe the cooker could be moved to the sue.
