The wife is out and I need to cook myself something to eat. On the box it says, "put in a pre-heated oven at 120 degrees". I hope I'm doing it right ?

Almost right.  I think you need a metal protractor though...

I had one that said "place on the top of a pre heated oven"

I thought it a bit silly to put it on top of the oven rather than in it, and yes 30 minutes later it was still stone cold.

If flat is 0 degrees, 120 degrees should be 30 degrees past vertical, so for thorough cooking it needs to be tipped over a bit more. Else cooking times will be protracted.

so, 100 centigrades = 9 tenths of a degree

And we need 120 degrees

that is 10,800 centigrades

we're gonna need a bigger oven for supper!!!

Instructions often say "preheat the oven to" for example gas mark 5.  I know someone who preheated just as it said put his pie in the oven and turned the oven off.  "

Well it just said preheat"
