Hello, name is Dennis,self taught diy`er, will tackle any do-able job but call in a pro where required. My time is taken up restoring a vintage car at the moment. A question for you, we have a standard lamp which when it worked used 4 12v halogen bulbs, it had a dimmer off/on switch which incorporated a transformer. The switch gave up and the lamp was consigned to the tip pile but her indoors liked it so it never got thrown, could I swap the dimmer/transformer switch for an on/off switch and use 240v halogen bulbs ?

no, the wiring will only be suitable for 12v. you could replace the transformer though. 12 & 230v lamps also have a different base so you wouldnt be able to fit them anyway
