Asus Eee Pc 904 Hd

Been asked to look at one of these net book things.

Currently running XP and has gotten slower and slower etc. Thinking a ripe candidate for the Windows look alike that is ZORIN OS which is Ubuntu basically. 80GB SSD in it btw

Anyone got one and put Linux on it?

You could always do a fresh install of bindows if you worried about software issues.

Running normally then! Reinstall Windows for instant fasterness.

I don't want to re-install Windows if I can help it. The owner's a bit of an old Luddite anyway, approaching retirement and isn't interested (in learning?) Ubuntu etc.

So......I've done as much as I can on the net book, cleaning it up, got it back on the net and his 3G USB modem working too.

But...........every time it boots up, shortly after I get the "found new hardware wizard" pop with the "search on line or install from disc" options. Christ knows what it is. I've been through Device Manager looked at Hidden Devices etc and gotten rid of any unknown devices and so on.

Just this pop up is a pain!

could it be some driver for the usb wifi? sometimes they don't install properly ! check what's in the startup via msconfig.

Sorry, just getting back on this. Nope, looking in Device Manager and even looking in Hidden Devices I found nothing. Expanded all the devices too.

So what happens if you "add new hardware",,, does it find something?

Does it have bluetooth?

No it doesn't have Bluetooth.

If I go through Device Manager and get rid of Unknown Devices then restart, one'll come back as per the screen dump below:



It's going back to the owner tomorrow whether this is sorted or not!

EDIT: If I try and Add New Hardware from Control Panel it'll find an Unknown Device and prompt to install from a location or search the Internet. Just ends up saying unable to install new hardware etc.

Why not just disable it in the drop down box???

Then hopefully it won't look for a driver all the time

That's the thing..........I have disabled it but it "comes back".

just a thought,

and,

I know nothing of computers,

could you disable new hardware in BIOS,,,?

You can view the hardware tree differently, this may give you a better idea of what this is?

In the details tab look for the 'Device ID' then find out what it is using Google.

Duly scoobed. You may have been right on this. Though there was no mention of anything Bluetooth in Device Manager I loaded the drivers for it on the off chance. At the same time I also reloaded ACPI Driver. So it was one or the other.

No more yellow icons / Unknown Devices!

It wasn't just a stab in the dark I remember reinstalling bindows on my sony laptop and the Toshiba Bluetooth driver was too new and wouldn't work (new device error) so I had to install an older version.
