I have an economy 7 thing and it just seems useless. I get up at half 4 to shower so adjusted the timer so the overnight heating would have finished however some mornings I get no hot water at all. I have had it replaced recently yet still the same issue.

Yes well.... it can be useless, depends on how it is utilised.
The whole idea is that you use cheap rate electricity over night usually between 11pm and 6am so if you have a hot water tank on a second timer It may not be heated for long enough to provide you with a hot shower at 4am.
What are timings you use?
Is the hot water cylinder well insulated,?
What have you had replaced recently?
