The builders had just been and removed a wall and inserted an RSJ to support what was above

I don't think I have ever seen such a flat cable squashed between the RSJ and a joist.

It was still live and working.

 
So which reference method do we use for this when we are carrying out calculations.

 
The house where the flat cable was has been rewired twice.

Previous wiring was lead twin, still all there just chopped off at the ends.

Before that it appears to be cotton wrapped rubber insulated singles, L clipped to one joist, N clipped to the next. never seen that before.

Was the N clipped to the neutral axis of the joist? 😁
