SMA Sunny Boy and Island

Recommended Posts

Timon

We are installing a Sunny Boy 2.5 and a Sunny Island 3.0 with a lithium ion battery back up and would like your assistance. We would like the system to feed the entire DB of the home (all loads) to maximise PV generation in normal grid present times, and then when the grid fails have the system only feed the essential loads to prevent over loading of the inverter and battery. How can we go about this ?

Please note it is a single phase dwelling, with no option to feed back into the grid as regulations do not allow this.

I don't think the sunny island inverter can be used with mains supply - I'll go and double check.

OK seems it can be used on and off grid. If no back-feed is allowed (highly unusual as you have a 'right' to back-feed 16A and if this exceeds some tolerance or other it's the DNOs responsibility and cost to upgrade your supply) you will need the export limitation device SMA also offer. I'm not sure if ths would count as an isolator (phone SMA technical helpline to check) in the event of grid failure - you must not backfeed the grid as this is a safety issue for DNO workers repairing the mains supply. With regards to ccts, you have options :-  install mini CU for the ccts you wish to power  - in the event of a grid fail you will need to isolate the other board, you may also be able to utilise the SMA home manager to power the devices you wish to maintain power too from battery.

I believe you can get auto-changover isoaltors for  grid fail events - other members of the forum can give better advice on that.
