Any advice on why 2 switches (back to back, one in the hallway, one in the living room) will both switch the hallway light on and off but we can’t get the living room switch to operate the living room light at all, the hallway switch is 2 way and operates the stair light too if this makes any difference 

 
I'm guessing you have replaced the switches .

Theres probably a loop  live   between  the hall & living  room switches  which you have in the wrong terminal .  

You've lost the sw/wire for the living room light somewhere .

Does the  stair light work OK  ?   

 
Have changed the lights but not the switches, probably got confused because there are 4 wires in the living room switch and they’re all red! 

Stair light works fine
