I have purchased some new wall lights , which have an earth lead , and two black leads coming from the pull switch , not seen this layout before , so a bit unsure how to wire to a standard red/black and earth cable in the wall

Are you saying the pull switch is separate to the light fitting? or it is built into the light fitting but is not connected leaving you to figure out how?

Is'nt there a set of connectors  marked L & N ?

Are you sure BOTH black wires go to the pull switch ?      Some light fitting makers don't seem to bother with using the right colours .

Your connections  COULD BE ...Red to the switch ..Black to a black floating wire, possibly from the lampholder  & earth to earth.

The live  (  Your Red)  always goes to the switch .

Hello dave85, welcome to the forum.  In all honesty if you cannot figure this out you are possibly working outside of your competence. Irrespective of the colours used, you just need to ensure the Live from the supply goes to one side of the switch, the other side of the switch goes to the lamp, the other side of the lamp goes to the neutral from the supply.  Any exposed metal parts will be connected to the earth from the supply.

Is this light fitting a new item brought from a reputable electrical accessory supplier? or is it an old, (second-hand/refurbished), item purchased privately from places such as e-bay?  It is not uncommon to find the internal wiring of a light fitting to use what appears to be non-standard colour identification, especially old/ second hand items. (sometimes this is heat protective sleeve over the standard colour insulation on the individual conductors), I though new items should have either sleeve or integral connector to identify polarity of L,N & E.
