Twice as long as the distance from one end to the middle....also applies to any linear measurement apart from elastic and other stuff
as to the original question.......depends on
what you want the switches to do
where the mains source cable is
addirional,switching
cable size if it's a very long run
size of lights etc

to switch 3 lights independantly I would start by buying a 3 gang switch.
