I think I posted this before  but worth a look .

Went to quote a rewire in my road ,  apparently a previous owner worked as a spark at the  big GEC  factory that used to be about 3 miles away  .  I'm guessing  that such a place would not stock twin /Earth   so  he nicked what they did stock  to rewire,   one inch  (25mm)   steel conduit  & VIR cable .

What's the mahoosive fan?  It looks more like the outside of a chippy.
It was  the Kitchen as I remember  , probably a  GEC / Xpelair monster .    Xpelair  was next door to the big Generator / motor place. 

It looks very professionally done, even if inappropriate.

Where would you see so many employees leaving a works  like this theses days I wonder ?

This area had dozens of factories like this when I was young , employing thousands  within 1 sq. mile .  

Start & stop times were staggered  to ease the traffic  and corporation  buses lined up by the dozen .

Where would you see so many employees leaving a works  like this theses days I wonder ?

This area had dozens of factories like this when I was young , employing thousands  within 1 sq. mile .

Where I lived, the Morris factory at turn of shift was a sea of blokes on bikes. You did not want to be going the wrong way on the cycle track at that time.

 
Ah  yes   ,  the  Austin   (Longbridge)    was similar ,    thankfully the other side of the city .   


I had a guided tour of longbridge once. Absolutely amazing place, huge, and just amazing.. trains came in with raw materials in one place and cars went out the other.. All destroyed by Thatcher..

Not to mention lettuced quality cars  that came out of the factory already rusty.  Perhaps related to the accountants touch I suppose.
Ha  !  Yep  they were useless at applying underseal  .  

I think there were many problems there .        Communist  controlled union leaders  (  As was our union ,ETU when I was an apprentice)    , poor management and a poor product. When they  launched the MINI  it could have  been a saviour  , but it was sold too cheap  ( Ford said that)  they even nearly missed out on the name MINI  which was suddenly on everyone's lips.   The first ones were called Austin  7   ,    a Morris Minor shrunken down & the engine turned sideways .

They also marketed  other marques under  MINI  , Morris , Riley, Wolseley  , all with different fronts /backs / badges etc .  

Original Mini was carp in my opinion ,  draughty , gear stick 3 mtrs long ,  under powered ,  noisy, no radio , some I believe  no heater ,  rubbish side windows , no rustproofing , an exposed floor panel edge taking all the rain & road grit etc,     and the distributor  exposed to rain behind the grille .        

The designer said the public didn't want luxury , they wanted a cheap car .  ( He drove a RR)  

Their other saviour,  later,   could have been Honda with their excellent engines etc    but I don't know the reasons ...the management parted company with them .

Ford seemed to have the right ideas with their mass produced popular big sellers like  Cortina ,  Escort  , Transit etc

BL et al had too many brands and too many cars, many overlapping in size, performance etc

VW in 1970 realised it had a one trick pony in the Beetle and it was falling out of favour - so they produced the Golf, making sure that was world beating, and their fortunes took off from there  - and from that success they expanded, acquiring Seat, Audi, Skoda et ............... but I do think now they are almost a BL of 2020 with too many brands, too many cars etc

Ford apparently spoke to the large industrial corporations of their day to find out what spec of car their sales staff wanted to drive around in...

Things like Sun-roofs were added..

And simple extras like badges on the boot denoting DL / GL / GLX along with the engine size....

Plus Vinyl roofs and metallic paint...

All introduced so that the regional sales manager could look more impressive on the factory car-park with his metallic paint, 1600 GLX, inc vinyl sun-roof...

Compared to the other sales staff in 1300DL or 1600GL Ford Cortina's!

Prior to this cars rarely had any  engine size or trim spec identified externally....

This fad has generally ended now... 

except the abundance of badges saying Hybid/Eco/ or other "green" credentials!
