Most are low power 'relays' so if you're close to them and with a still fairly decent signal from the router  they are good (in terms of throughput speed)  They all make the device show strong wifi even if the actual throughput may be  crawling.   

Most effective in drywall rather than metal backbox in blockwork    (and they don't last forever so as long as the customer supplied them its good repeat business)  

Mesh network systems or  larger multi aerial (relay) Boosters in loft space or cupboards may be a better solution

 
Before I had cat 5 run everywhere we used Devolo units. The main benefit was using the socket circuit to use hard wired links from the router to the connection and some have WiFi extenders on them too 

 they have a free tool you can load on your laptop so you can see the speed of connection between the units

 not the cheapest but did the job for us
