Hi folks, I'm a DIY and electrical novice about to redecorate a bedroom and make a few changes, will have the old man for support but also looking for some outside opinions and advice on a few things.

Cheers!

Hello PaulC78,   Welcome to the forum....

One of the most useful bits of advice for any DIY work, is before you disconnect any wires from anything..

TAKE ONE OR MORE PHOTOGRAHS OF THE ORIGINAL WIRING!

(Many forget to do this and the forum is littered with old posts from people having problems).

Preferable including terminal designations, especially for things like light switches..

as not all manufactures label their terminals the same..

e.g. depending on the type of switch and who made it, you could all sorts of combinations including;

"C"

"Com"

"L1"

"L2"

"L3"

"L4"

"1-Way"

"2-Way"

"Loop".

Also don't forget that although sockets only need Lives, Neutrals and Earths..

Light fittings & Switches,  will also have "Switched Lives" as well as permanent lives..

and sometimes wires that may appear to be a neutral are actually a switched live..

Hence photos are a very good record of how it was originally connected if you do get into difficulties!
