Hi All,

Just wondered what the average daily rate for a subby is in the South West.

Gave a quote a few days ago and got ripped to shreds when someone quote half the price

Cheers

To answer Binky, that's just me - I work alone except on bigger jobs when I get a local chap in as my labourer.

yes Batty, I think you're right, probably got a 'reputation' locally so has to travel further to get work. But that only further dents his profitability as he burns more diesel and racks up more miles (more maintainance required).

I agree with Cirrus, there are out of work sparks in my area too:

I live in a small town (Lutterworth, if you know it) where the locals have webbed feet. It is very much a white, middle class, executive area. Everyone knows everyone elses business here. I live in the town and people see me about at the footy pitch, or in my van and recognise me. Also I only do top quality work - no sloppy rubbish. In 3 yrs self emp'd I've never been called back to a job as the result of faulty workmanship (right first time). Most (about 75%) of my work is repeat or recommendation and despite this so-called recession my third year turnover is up from year two. Apart from small repairs or accessory swaps, everything is certificated and notified as needed (everything above board and legal). Also absolute 100% honest advice and look for the most cost effective solution for the client (think outside the box).

Not trying to be big headed (I know it looks that way), just trying to explain my business ethos and why I think it works for me. Something I brought with me from the automotive R&D sector.

I'm thinking of taking on a lad soon - the occasional help I employ is great, but I'm finding I could do with a bit of help almost every day now.

I've got a friend in Walsall who runs a 40+ strong firm. They specialise in wiring up modular buildings, but do plenty of other stuff too. He operates the same business ethos as myself and his firm is going from strength to strength. His clients know that once his chaps have finished they are unlikely to suffer any business downtime due to faults. He gets about 20 CVs a week - most he wouldn't touch with a barge pole. He has very low staff turnover.

Your business ethos is similar to mine, only many people in my area cannot afford top price gear or installations. Most of my work is by recommendation, and repeat busines. My biggest problem has been keeping up with it which is unfortunate as I have lost customers as a result, which is why I took on an apprentice. People don't like paying for electrics, but what they hate paying for is shoddy service / poor installation work, and I would rather earn less money and do a job properly, than loose my reputation.
