ive been thrown this question by my firm to find out but im stumped

how would you carry out a systematic fault diagnosis of a reported faultly circuit

can anyone help

many thanks if you can

depends on the type of circuit, I would run through the tests for the type of circuit and see what you see

I assume this is basically asking..

"what is a logical approach to investigating any reported fault"

I would suggest a procedure something along these sort of lines:-

A/ Understand the customers complaint:-

Speak to the customer to identify the fault symptoms.

  • Where is the physical location of the non-operational item(s)?
  • What circuits are they supplied from?
  • Where is the distribution board for the faulty circuits(s)?
  • Has there been any recent alterations / maintenance work?
  • How old is the circuit, (i.e. how long has it previously been working for)?

B/ Locate the circuits / distribution boards / accessories

Check for the obvious,

  • Are all fuses intact?
  • Are all MCB's, RCD's correctly set 'ON'?
  • Are all switches isolators on?
  • Any timer switches correctly on?

C/ Investigate circuit composition / layout / connections

Undertake safe isolation of circuit.

  • Carry out 'dead' tests on circuit.
  • Verify continuity of CPC, Line & Neutral!
  • Verify Insulation resistance of circuit.
  • Verify continuity of all switches, (as well as physically On is electrical continuity sound)?
  • Test continuity through accessory leads

etc...
