2: just short L and N at some point. just whatever method is easiest. sometimes both into same croc clip, connector block, bit of wire etc

 
wont 500v blow the bulbs unless disconnected trannys bulbs etc or test at 250v ??
As Andy said..

Thats why you test with Live & Neutral joined and just go across (L-N) and (E),

so you don't damage any equipment vunerable to testing...

Good to do that on consumer unit changes when everthing is plugged in. I usually do it at 250v sorts out if you have anything faulty on circuit. Also on callouts for tripping RCD's that way it tells if its equipment or wiring.

is it ok to do l&n to earth on the lights after a consumer unit change so all the bulbs dont have to removed. if so, what would be written on the EIC (niceic version)? cheers wayne
