    Electric test fail.

I would agree with your assumption.. A typical broken ring fault rarely has all three conductors totally open circuit..?? I have been on faults with similar symptoms to yours, which have been due to a socket front removed because it was going to be inaccessible behind some furniture.. But all...

    GU10 downlight - what's the bracket for?

Nothing to do with earthing... as a clip on bracket that can fall off cannot provide any form of mechanically robust earth connection! Open backed cheap tat like those sort of lamps run the risk of the wires physically touching the back of the lamp.. which can cause problems of heat related...

    Sparking emersion heating switch

Obviously if its a 2-way or intermediate light switch, a "red-on" indication could be either way? hence not really much use on a light switch unless it is a 1-way! And excluding those in-line table lamp sort of switches.. e.g...

    Sparking emersion heating switch

When breaking a live circuit there will always be some element of arcing and sparking until the contact gap is sufficiently wide to stop the current flowing. Think about how lightening, or spark plugs, or gas hob ignition etc.. which illustrate the principle that electricity will jump across...

    Hi Everyone, a question

There is no immediate or potential danger of electric shock, injury, overload related fire etc.. that could make the installation unsatisfactory for continued use.. And there is no code required for an unswitched socket as the connected appliance can be isolated by simply unplugging it. So it...

    earth bonding to water

The Op actually asked if they need to be "Earth Bonded" not earthed.. which for a question in the DIY area is quite a reasonable description of the problem they are enquiring about.. The posts makes no suggestion that they are looking at using copper pipes to earth the installation..?? A...

    Mock exam question

Factually incorrect information is probably not much help to anyone new to the industry trying to pass exams which are based on the current edition of wiring regulations NOT historic issues of BS7671.. Familiarity with, and 'usage of, correct current terminology can be critical when answering...

    Monitoring for maximum demand

Maximum demand metering is more of a need for commercial / industrial applications.. e.g. https://www.businessenergyuk.com/knowledge-hub/maximum-demand-meters/ But similar problems to yours in residential (private and/or rental), are not uncommon.. e.g. this article...

    earth bonding to water

A few points spring to mind.... Have you been given an invoice with an itemised cost breakdown? If not ask for one? On the one hand £150 for up-to 4 or 5 hours work sounds very reasonable.. (e.g. 4hrs @ £37.50 or 5hrs @ £30.00 per hour).. But on second thoughts your profile states you are...

    earth bonding to water

Checkatrade and other such sites make their money from excessive subscription fees that trades persons have to pay them.. So would be biting the hand that feeds if they publish reviews suggesting members are poor at their job! Who do you think pays for the expensive TV advertising? Any trades...

    earth bonding to water

The only items requiring bonding are extraneous parts liable to introduce and earth potential. Your "electrician" probably needs to read 411.3.1.2?

No, the incoming blue water supply pipe is not a extraneous part.

Will a new metal CU be mandatory or advisory

From the information you have given I wouldn't trust that EICR or the information written on it... as that CU has a few more concerns than just plastic enclosure? Also I am guessing whoever did the inspection hasn't got section 514 in their regs book?

    Electric test fail.

The BIG problem is that electrical work is NOT regulated in England... DIY electrical work is legally permitted... Electricians do not have to be members of any voluntary trades bodies... So there is no incentive for any of the trades bodies to do any random spot checks on anyone! There is a...
