    Earth Rod Positioning

Hi, This is the scenario: 1) Scout hall with TN-C-S supply. 2) Outbuilding needs electricity supply. This is an equiment store with what I expect to be an "earthy" steel frame and "earthy" concrete floor (although I have not yet measured to see if frame is extraneous). Because of the TN-C-S...

    Bathroom dimmer with timer fan

I went to a property last week where the lights had failed in the ensuite bathroom. The circuit was controlled by a dimmer and had two 12V downlights and a fan on the circuit. The downlights each had their own transformer. I didn't look too hard at the fan but there was no indication that it...

    Hearing Impaired alarm

I have recently fitted AICO Ei160RC series of heat and smoke detectors in a house. The lady of the house is deaf so the system includes a hearing impaired unit which has a strobe and vibrating pad. The client has now asked if I know of a "Hearing impaired" security alarm system. I don't know...

IR Test Line to CPC same as Neutral to CPC

I was Insulation Resistance testing a lighting circuit yesterday. Because of ELV transformers in the circuit I only tested between Line to CPC and Neutral to CPC. I was surprised to get the same value 259Mohms for both. I know that it is quite a respectable value (for an oldish installation) but...

Main Equipotential bonding identified at terminations

I have some main equipotential bonding that needs to go external, in a visible position. The client is not keen on seeing green and yellow cable or conduit. Is it ok to use black 10mm2 single and identify green and yellow at terminations?

    RCBO Test: 5 x delta I = 1 x delta I

    Tested a 30mA 6A RCBO today and got the following readings: 1 x Delta I 0 deg = 18ms 1 x Delta I 180 deg = 27ms 5 x Delta I 0 deg = 17 ms 5 x Delta I 180 deg = 27ms 5x reading are normally much less that 1x! It's the first RCBO that I have fitted that doesn't have a functional earth lead...

    No functional Earth on RCBO

I bought a Contactum RCBO today. When I got home I was surprised that there was no functional earth cable, I assumed that it was damaged and the earth had simply pulled out. However, it looked identical to a BM one that I had in stock which does have a functional earth cable. When I compared...

    Direct Earth - TN-S or TN-C-S

I'm still learning - please be gentle! A victorian house I visited recently had just had an extension. Consequently, the DNO had re-sited the supply into a modern flush mounted cabinet on the side wall of the extension. Inside the box written on the back of a "PME" label were the words "DIRECT...
