Running a router and a point to point Wi-Fi system off a solar panel.

A friend wants to send point to point Wi-Fi from a road to his house which is 500m away and there’s no power at the road.

As far as I can tell a standard router uses between 5W and 20W

My question is, what size solar panel would be needed to keep a battery charged enough to run that kind of setup 24/7?

Obviously there would be less use late at night.

What is he looking to do with this ?
Is it just a WiFi extension from the house to extend the range ?

If its just that you can get external WiFi antennas with over 1km line of sight range.
 
A lot will depend on your Worst Case Scenario.

For instance, you get a week with no sun, like recently :-<

The bridge requires 0.5A at 24V.

You will require a 24 x 0.5 x 24 x 7 = 2kWh battery to keep a 24/7 connection for a week - about £300 ?

And enough PV panels to keep that topped up.

Let's say 24 x 0.5 x 24 = 300 generated watts per day, to keep topped up for the cloudy days.

Say double that to cover low generation mid-winter.

Two 400W PV panels, about £200 ?

24V 800W Inverter, about £200 ?

Much easier (and cheaper) to go with mort's high gain antenna at the house.
