We laugh about this, but in every Australian bathroom, is a double socket right next to the shower, usually with the washing machine and a hair dryer plugged in. I don't think the aussies regularly kill themselves as even they are not stupid enough to use the hair dryer inside the cubicle while the water is running. In Australia you can get out of the shower, dry your hair and your body, get dressed and leave the room. In the UK you are forced to leave the room with wet hair and dry it somewhere else, unless your bathroom is big enough to have a socket 3 metres away from the shower and bath. In our new house I will probably fit a socket right outside the bathroom door, and leave a generous gap under the door so a hairdryer with a long enough lead can be used.
