Hi!

Soon i will have an exam and this is few of the question they will ask me.

I try to find answers myself but having difficulty with some of them. I am posting all what I have done if somebody could have a look at my work and missing answers I would really appreciate.

Question 1

1 a) State three types of building materials an electrician would

encounter during electrical installation work.

For example

Twin core and earth cable (general internal power cables)

3-core and earth cable(normally used for the connections between two way switches)

Armoured cable - Armoured cable is normally used to transfer power either underground or overhead.

B) *State three areas of external influences which may affect the

installation.

Appendix 5 ofthe IEE regulations classifies external influences thet may affect an installation. This classification divided into three secctions, the environment (a) how that enviroment is utilized (B) and constructions of buildings.

Question 2

What parties would be consulted during the design process for an installation and what regulations would be considered during that time.

Question 3

What is the *difference between a circuit diagram and a

location diagram as used in electrical installation work.

A circuit diagram shows the electrical connections, how it interacts and operates not necessarily how it physically looks. A location diagram would show the physical location or layout of wiring and components but not how it is connected or how it operates.

Question 4

State* three factors which will result in a Periodic Inspection being

required.

licensing authority requirements,

legislation requirements

compliance with BS7671,

CHANGE OF OCCUPANCY,

change of use of premises

any major change of electrical loading

where there is a reason to believe there has been damage to the installation

Question 5

a) State in the correct sequence, the first three tests to be carried

out on a newly completed lighting circuit.

Safely isolate the installation ,

test the continuity of circuit protective and bonding conductors,

test for continuity of ring final circuit (if applicable)

carry out an insulation resistance,

test the polarity

cary out an earth electrode test (if applicable)

carry our an earth fault loop impedance test

carry out funcional testing including testing and rcd

B) State the three test currents used to confirm the compliance of

a 30mA RCD protecting equipment located outdoors.

Question 6

*At the completion of an electrical installation, it is inspected and

tested. State the

a) necessary paperwork to be completed and handed to the

customer/client

B) responsibility of the electrical contractor with regard to

periodic inspections

c)responsibility of the electrical contractor who carries out minor

additions or alterations to an installation in terms of completing

paperwork.

Question 7

State one application for each of the following voltages, in relation to the distribution of energy

a) 230v

B) 11Kv

400/230v.

Question 8

Describe three factors which influence the choice of repair or replacement of faulty electrical equipment.

I'll make a couple of comments on what you've done up to now - but I can't see anyone just filling in the answers for you.......you'll never learn.

To be honest, a lot of this stuff is common sense and nothing to do with electrics. ;)

Think more wood, breezeblock, tiles, asbestos...

installation.

You're looking for things 'external' to the installation which may affect how it operates - ambient temperature, for instance

Question 2

What parties would be consulted during the design process for an installation and what regulations would be considered during that time.

If you can't work this out, are you on the right course? - the person ordering the work would be one of them!

You've put this quite well - except for the highlighted bit - a circuit diagram shows how a circuit operates, not the electrical connections or how it's connected;)

If they ask for three, just put three - you'll lose marks

Not helping you with this - are you sure you're not a plumber??

You'll have to get GN3 out - if you haven't got a copy, now's a good time.

additions or alterations to an installation in terms of completing

paperwork.

to get you going,

5a) The first three tests would be R1+R2, Insulation resistance and Polarity. Could argue Visual Inpection is first, but thats more of inspection than test.

5b) 15mA, 30mA and 150mA
