Hi,

I am really hoping that someone can help me with this, as I am starting to bang my head against a brick wall.

We have recently had an electric shower installed. After the work was completed, the electrician advised us that we need to get the main fuse upgraded from 60amp to 100amp. I have contacted the Network Operator who have quoted

Don't worry about it Alid, just carry on as before , tread gently through green pastures down to the silver sands at the water's edge and let the wind carry away your worries on gentle zephers.

Bloody 'ell where did that come from ??

The 60A HRC fuse will carry short term overload currents quite happily.

I was on a job recently where I had DNO out to fit an isolator switch. I asked him what size cutout fuse was and he handed me the fuse holder and said have a look for yourself. I took it out and found an 80 amp in. Asked if he could upgrade it to 100 amp as I know the house will be using lots of juice and he told me to get a 100 amp from his van and put it into the fuse holder. When he was finished putting REC isolator in he put fuse holder back in with new 100 amp in and went on his way. No hassle and no additional cost to customer.

Great philosophy that and it's only wednesday!!! Life must be rosey in the midlands!!

Ah you mean spending the last 3 weeks polishing my tools , sharpening chisels, cleaning van , checking the cellphone to see why it doesn't ring , polishing the dog , looking on here in the middle of the day, observing that the only people who phone are the ones after the money that you are not earning.

Somebody can give me all the work on their books in North B,ham for a fee .

Someone else can build me a website for a fee.

Would I like to advertise in a Fire Service Magazine for a fee.

Wholesaler; Would I like to buy 10 million twin sockets @

Mega,

My neighbour took this out with "our" accountant as he is one in the same.

He actually had an investigation.

The accountant would have charged over

Tax investigation

my wife is a self employed accountant

she hates tax investigations because she is under scrutiny aswell

she had one last year for a sole trader plasterer who was on CIS

Tax man would not let it go,but he was squeaky clean....could not find anything wrong

Then it came to light it wasnt him they were after it was the guy employing him because of his other dealings !!!!!!

1. Hello & welcome to the forum..2. It is actually impossible to answer your question fully without more info..

i.e.

What is the rating of the shower?

What other appliances are in the property?

What sort of heating is used.. any electric underfloor?

How many people live in the house.. more people = more power used..

3. The alleged "Electrician" should not have completed his work without verifying that the existing installation is sufficient for any additional loads he has added.

Thats regulation 131.8 page 16 of the wiring regs BS7671 (red cover not the new amendment)

4. Have you been given an Electrical certificate and a Part-P compliance certificate?

5. Why would any competent electrician suggest a sudden jump from 60A to 100A... what happened to the 80A size in the middle?

Most DNO's only fit 80A on new builds..

so a 100A could often be considered as ABOVE average load.

6. As the others have said..

It could well be ok... I would guess approx 80% - 90% chance all will be fine..

BUT depending upon your specific circumstances there is in my opinion a 10% -20% change you could pop the 60A..

How old is the physical fuse itself?

What is your current loading?

Has it been running above capacity for a few years?

Now if the house burns down because of the undersized cable and oversized fuse YOU installed, who do you think the DNO are going to be pointing the HSE at? The DNO Eng will claim he did not do it and he would be correct. WHo got the fuse from the van? Who installed it in the holder? You have been given a hospital pass.

Join the FSB (Federation of Small Business) and you get free Tax advice from HMRC trained specialists and Tax protection against in-depth tax investigations !

Worth the membership fee just for that alone without mentioning the other benefits !

^ absolutely correct cloverman, though the support they give is very *******, you should check this out against the cost with your accountant and the cover provided by both schemes, and there are also others out there too!

Just to confuse the issue!

One of our dairy clients regularly blows his main fuse, kept calling DNO out. The chap got sick of coming so gave him a box of 80A fuses so he could swap them himself!

I have several farmer customers with a stock of fuses supplied by DNO staff. It causes major confusion when they phone for new supplies!
