For those who haven`t seen the wifi access points from Cisco........

https://meraki.cisco.com/

They`re rather awesome; and wholly set up from the cloud - the units are just plug & play.

IF you have a VAT number, and want to spend an hour on their free webinar about the stuff, they`ll send you a FREE unit.

( with 3 yrs licence included ;) )

Datasheet: https://meraki.cisco.com/lib/pdf/meraki_datasheet_MR16.pdf

I`ve fitted a few of these now - the coverage, speed and controllability is impressive - as is the way you can set the ssid`s and layer 3 or 7 firewall rules.

If anyone is interested in £ 500 worth of kit for an hour`s time in front of the computer,.........?

I am still trying to understand what a £500 wi fi access point, that seems to rely on some paid for "cloud" service to work, is going to do for me, that my free ISP supplied wireless router won't?

Clearly I am not the target market for such things, I just don't "get" it.

Right.

I watched it this morning - if you`re into this stuff, it IS informative........

Dave - the stuff isn`t primarily aimed at the domestic market - We`ve fitted two units in a large 17th century pub, and it floods the whole building ( and most of the car park) with signal.

Anyone with a wifi enabled device is logged by the system, as either a first time visitor, or returnee. You can see a google map of the premises, with exactly where everyone is in the building, and what they`re using to access the wifi. You can either charge for access, put up a splash screen, etc,

PLUS:

You can lock down bandwdth to individual items, or from types of site ( social network, P2P, streaming etc) ; and / or lock out individual devices, either from the whole wifi, or from specified sites ( e.g. don`t want staff going onto faceachebook? easy.)

PLUS

The system can be spread across multiple locations - ALL controlled from one tablet or PC, anywhere in the world. You NEVER have to set foot in the building.

As for the VAT issue - I`m using my client`s VAT number, and its been accepted ;)

n.b It was pointed out that some peeps couldn`t find the link to the free AP............

might have to take a look at that later

Who wants to rent their vat number to me for an hour? :C
you can rent mine. it'll cost you 1x router and a trip up north to install it. on the plus side, you get a free 1 hour seminar out of it, and after that you should know how to set it up for me
