Almost electrocuted by kettle plug laptop charger

I have to ask... What are all these references to "kettles"

I tried that too, but it cooked the nuts first.

Not quite true.

PC's use the standard IEC connector. Kettles use the hot condition variant of that which has a notch cut out of it.  A kettle lead will fit a pc, but a pc lead will not fit a kettle.

BTW I rarely see a laptop using the standard IEC plug, they almost all use the smaller clover leaf plug.
