Hi Guys, Ive been asked to supply and fitting a lighting system for the above for large farm in Taunton...

Normally I would be looking at sodium lights are light purity is not so essential BUT now the landowner has spoken

to a nighbour who recommends metal halide due to cost/clarity and power consumption...

what do you know about metal halide and what would you recommend in a chicken shed.

Its quite low ceilings with the lights being supported on chains at about 8-10ft offa round...

Cheers

Matt

There are Defra regulations about lighting for poultry sheds.

Either way you need to be aware of temp rise / increased fire risk due to dust.

Standard around these parts is dimmable anti-corrosion fluorescents, but not cheap. That's for free range sheds, too much light leads to feather pecking, too little = no eggs. Are you talking layers or broilers?

It's  a harsh environment - think ammonia from faeces, and dust is a given really. Using LED would reduce fire risk (BBQ chicken anyone), and I would think timing to simulate daylight hours would be important for chicken health. LED would offer at least 50% saving in leccy use, plus much less maintainance. pay back would be around 2 years against HF florries.
