In my day we used proper saddles

These 3/4" brass pins and lead saddles have been on the shelf at home since the late 1950's.
Apart from melting the saddles down to make fishing leads, I cant see there ever being a use for them.

Proper job, both of them. You’d need a respirator and welding gauntlets to use the lead ones now! Tricky to pick up the pins and hold them between your teeth though
