Does anyone have ideas as what would be the most suitable lighting scheme for an industrial workshop with a floor area of approx 2500 square metres and reasoning why; either high bay lighting or fluorescent lighting. The lighting would be installed at over 6 metres high and would require lux levels of over 750 lux at floor level. Many Thanks.

would get some advice from lighting suppliers - the larger wholeslaers often have technical specialists. On a larger job like that desribed you should be able to get advice / lighting plan free of charge - they do it with a view to selling you the gear. may also be worth considering LED equivalents - grants towards costs are available towards cost of carbon friendly technology.

Binky beat me to it ..  go with what he says .

Without the expertise of a lighting expert you could drop an enormous ballcock .

I wouldn't use HF Fluorescent again  TBH.  Control gear only lasts about 2 years .

Many thanks for your help guys, I will look at taking some advice from a lighting manufacturer/ supplier.

I personally think HF is better. I do work for a charity which has a mixture of switch start and HF. I will say the HF stuff certainly seems to be less maintenance  You rarely have to change lamps and tubes. You do get the odd ballast going but most can be replaced fairly cheaply and easily. I can never understand why HF stuff is so much more expensive. To me they have a lot less wiring. Granted the ballasts are dearer than a choke, capacitor and starter. But surely they are easier to put together so should be at least the same price.

High Frequency gear should prevent stroboscopic effect too I hear. has anyone ever had any issues with stroboscopic effect caused by fluorescent lighting?
