For what it costs and the time it takes, I have and will continue to fit the earth wire to the back box.

My house which was built in 1989 has all of it's wiring done this way, I continued the good practice when I made changes.
Not criticising here it is up to the individual if they chose to do this but you state 'good practice' therefore you must feel not fitting a cpc to the back box is 'bad practice' ?

Not at all, it's not a binary 0 or 1. If your car goes in for a service and they dont wash and valet it, is that bad practice? - No of course not, if they do give it the works then that would be best practice IMHO. This is just the same, just a tiny bit more than the regs if you like.

Can you imagine the amount of time and miles and mile of copper that have been wasted doing this:)

You two will have to agree to disagree

@Richard-the-ninth we are not arguing just sharing a bit of banter, what this forum could do with.
You speak for yourself, I was arguing with you lol.

Seriously, I’m not arguing with anyone and yes from me and fleeting it was just banter. Apologies if I’ve offended anyone, it really was not my intention.

You should always remember:-

There's no need, except where you have two floating lugs, which I have never seen, but no harm in doing so. Wooden back boxes are clearly exempt 😃

1. please stop telling people how to play with electricity.
2. You should know that if there is a fixed lug then there is no need to earth the back box.
Bit harsh there i would say,
You can get advice on anything on youtube ,forums etc from tying your shoelaces to flying a plane , people will allways want to give it a go , indeed thats how we all learn , the fact that the op has photos of the outlet of the wall already would mean that johnb2713 has not told op how to play with electrickery !!, he could have suggested to get a spark in ,
Regarding earth fly leads , i have been taught (in my relatively short career) if its metal backbox fix a fly lead in it , as metal accesories my be fixed , defo no bad practice imho ,
(Cant spell definitely, defenitly,defonitly!!😂)

When did that change? Seems a bit odd to relax that, I've seen light switches with live screws!

Barry, Ignore my suggestion of an earth wire to the box, it does potentially add a tiny bit of safety but it's not a requirement any more.
Too true John, would never advise/tell anyone NOT to bother putting the extra precautionary connection if that option is there.

Me too also, if I see an earth tag on a metal box I use it if possible, call it unnecessary habit, tradition, whatever you like but don't say don't bother.

I don't believe I have been critical but that is probably minutiae on your part. With the exception of details I have already cited in #9 there is no requirement in BS7671 to connect a cpc, in fact my comment in #15 is debatable and as unless I am mistaken BS7671 makes no mention of this.

Sounded like a critic to me, but that's Forums, always a know all ready to pounce on minutiae.
LOL Fleeting is good though, saves everyone a load of time reading regulations, you can make a statement on any topic and you will get chapter and verse of what the regs say. I'm eternally grateful #;o)

Hey guys, it's no big deal, I'm indebted to fleeting for correcting my belief, it actually made me research the subject a little more and found he was 100% correct but the IET also say that adding the earth wire was considered good practice so effectively we were both right.
There's no need to get wound up with handbags at dawn, far more happening in the world a lot more serious.
