    Reminder to take care guys

Called in to a house this evening to quote for fitting an extractor fan in the shower room. Customer wanted the vent taken out through either the soffit board or a vented roof tile. After a quick look at the soffit pretty sure it's made of asbestos insulating board. (I know I cannot say for...

    Wireless smoke alsrms

Have any of you guys installed a wireless linked smoke alarm system? I'm doing the electrics on a three story Victorian house refurb and the owner is keen to use a wireless linked system across all floors. I've never installed one before and was wondering how reliable the signalling between base...

This made my eyebrows go up!

Request in the form of "would this be possible" in a large family home that's being refurbished. 1) Two shower rooms, each fitted with a 10.8 kW electric unit 2) 7.2 kW induction hob. 3) Two double ovens, each rated at 4.6 Kw. 4) In kitchen. Washing machine, tumble dryer, dishwasher, kettle...

    Stupidest injury ever?

Doing a rewire job. Head stuck under floorboards threading new cables. Didn't notice a nail sticking out of one of the joists. Caught one of my nostrils on it when pulling my head out.......

Two radial circuits into one MCB

This type of thing may well have been posted before so apologies if it causes some members to groan! Over a brew today a younger sparky asked what we thought of putting two radial circuits into one MCB. He asked as he'd been replacing a rodent damaged ring but due to the house being occupied...

    Interesting one

I went to a job where the customer wanted the wiring in his garage updated and some extra sockets added. Went to do my initial checks at the consumer unit and was surprised to find the house wasn't earthed but the consumer unit had an installation date of 2013 on it and the customer had all...

    Today's mess!

Called out to a job, RCD continually tripping. Traced to downstairs socket ring. Test, around 1000 ohms between live/earth. Start tracing. Sockets wired in 1mm T&E, no earth sleeving, six cables shoved into back of one socket............... I advised customer that at least a partial rewire...

    Old double pole fuse

Hi guys. Could anyone offer any advice re having an old main fuse changed? I'm doing some remedial work and an EICR on a flat for a customer. The main incomer fusing is via an old, unearthed steel double pole fuse box with a broken door. I've told my customer I am not prepared to sign off the...

    Kitchen nightmare

Hi all. Could I ask for clarity on something I'm puzzling over? (Currently at home suffering badly from hay fever so not thinking fully clearly!) I was asked to raise some sockets in a kitchen for a customer who wants granite splashbacks fitted. Long story cut short the electrics were installed...

    My week

Just having a moan. Sorry!  Thus so far:- Course I booked got cancelled at the last minute. Delivery truck turned up with 75% of my order missing, rest soaking wet on back of flatbed! Had to buy a new voltage detector as broke my old one. Lost a job I quoted for. Tried to order a new...

    Twin and Earth used outside

Just had a (good natured!) ribbing from a fellow electrician about twin and earth being run on an outside wall. House we are working on has the feed to the upstairs shower running externally in white T&E clipped direct with no protection. This is something I usually avoid, and suggested I'd...

    Torque screwdrivers

Can anyone recommend a good torque screwdriver that they have been using? The cheap-ish one I picked up at the local leccy trade counter has given up the ghost and I've been "advised" I need to replace it........

    Interesting tactic

Had a call from a lady in her 70's regarding a flyer pushed through her letterbox, from her "Local, friendly electrical contractor." Very slick, full colour with some nasty pictures of burned out consumer units. Headline states "Warning! The rules concerning domestic consumer units (fuse...

    Hybrid Rewire?

i was investigating some strange readings on a lighting circuit. Take the kitchen switch plate off, all good. New twin and earth, sleeved correctly. But.........about four inches above the switch, embedded in filler was a piece of choc block connector attaching the nice new twin and earth to the...

    New Use For Telephone Cable

Had a request from a customer to move a socket in her bedroom. Simple enough thinks me. Off with the power, remove double socket faceplate to find.........it's a spur that's been wired using telephone cable!
