I use a smooth sided cone cutter rather than the stepped one. That way I can make any sized hole. I can see the point of stepped ones if you have a need to be able to size holes with reasonable accuracy.

The other issue in slightly thicker materials you can drill a square edged hole with the stepped bits where it's angled with the other kind. Sort of significant it it's 5mm thick.

I carry all 3 on the van, hole saws, step drills & cone cuts, they all have their place.

I also have some Greenlee hole punches, awesome tools.

I love those hole punches sidewinder, far superior to hole saws. TBH I almost always use hole saws, with the occasional hole punch.

I use hole cutters, cone drills and stepped drills,

as SW says, different uses for each.

do you still get those cutters that you tighten with a spanner? they are great for confined spaces, I no longer have mine, :(

I use a stepped cone cutter.

Great for drilling accurate holes, e.g 20mm or 25mm for counduit / SWA glands etc.

Especially useful for opening up an existing 20mm knock out up to 25mm or larger.

That opps adaptor is genius

Thumbs up also for greenlee punch tool, awsome tool
