Connecting solar surge protection device to earth

Hi all. Could you please clarify whether it is permissible to connect my solar surge protection device to the earth connection of my inverter, considering that in my setup, the earth is connected to the metal body of the inverter? Or is it necessary to connect the surge protection device to a completely separate earth rod? Thanks!
