Electrician newbie

Hi everyone my name is Nayim. I am 21 years old.I am starting an electrician course with Alphabase training in Kent, level 2 which i will complete in about 4 months. I dont really have any knowledge of electrical installation except a couple hours of youtube videos. Any tips and advice for beginners please let me know and would be much appreciated. Thanks

Welcome aboard, good luck with your training. I'm retired and out of touch with the latest and greatest regulations, there are many on here that know them inside out and I'm sure will guide you as/when needed.

you may finish the course in 4 month, but you certainly wont be competant to be doing electrical work after that

I hope I am wrong... But the old saying "If something sounds too good to be true.. It probably is"...
More often than not ends up being very accurate...

What you describe above, in my personal opinion, sounds very optimistic and probably beyond reasonable expectation..!??
Although you could reasonably learn the basics of the wiring regulations in 4 months...

I doubt you would have a sufficient grasp of the electrical science, physics and maths, plus the practical installation skills, required to design, install, inspect, test & certify your electrical work to ensure that it fails safe, so you don't endanger any people property or livestock with your work?

I fear you could end up spending a lot of time and money on a course that will not give you the qualifications needed to progress into your chosen prospective career. (The forum archives are littered with posts from people who done what are general termed "Short Courses" then found themselves still unable to progress into their desired career path, as most employers would not recognise the limited qualification's they had spent thousands of pounds to acquire!!!

The electrical trade covers a wide spectrum of work, which includes some overlap of skills and knowledge and other specialised skills and knowledge.. Some companies have a broad field of work others just keep within a narrow sector..

e.g. Commercial, Industrial, Shop fitting, Maintenace, New build, Private domestic, Solar, EV, Rental sector, Inspection & Testing, Portable appliance testing, Schools & council work, Network distribution, Streetlighting, Electrical generation, Farms & Agricultural installations etc.. etc.. etc..

Have you thought about what area of work you would ideally like to be able to get into?
I could be worthwhile checking if the qualifications you hope to get from your course are applicable in the sector you would like to work in?

I wish you well with your studies..
And if you do have a good grasp of maths & physics these will be very valuable in the world of electrical work

Welcome fella, try get a job as a mate or improver to get your experience and skills up on the practical side of things. Invaluable experience for when you become an electrician.

work towards obtaining a cscs, ecs card as well to work on site. youtube is a great place to learn. I recommend bundy, John ward and sparkyninja. Helped me a lot in my studies

yes your right, my course provider (Access training) has actually mentioned that 4 months is the quickest time anyone could possibly finish level 2. so i understand its abit optimistic.

however i have mock exams in March and i started the course in October

Usually the course is 2 years

i am getting online tutoring couple days a week so should be able to fit in my schedule

hi thanks for your reply. My full course is over 2 years and i was told the quickest people have completed it was over a couple months. i would obviously take much longer as i have just started learning about electrics. i am planning on taking my exams for level 2 around May time, then will complete my practical training. i have not yet decided what type of sector i would like to work in but will look into electrician trainee for the time being.


i am currently paying 3.5k for the course which covers level 2 City and Guilds Electrician course, i am currently on indeed looking for a labourer courses. Thankfully i have a drivers licence which many jobs seem to require

i hope finding a balance between full time work and studying will be viable

because of the fact im seeing very few opportunities for part time work as a helper / labourer
