Guys,

Looking at changing some 4 pin compact fluorescent lights in a room that will be a staff room. Floating ceiling to come down and false ceiling going in with solid board insulation, then plasterboard and skim.

Thinking a couple of LED 'fluorescent' strip lights. There is a second circuit that was wall lights. I was thinking of re-using this and dropping 2 230V LED downlighters above two desks.

My questions:

  1. Never fitted a downlighter. Is it a case of a suitably sized hole and wire in series 230V L&N? How much space is required around the insulation?
  2. If installing above a false ceiling what are the rules regarding cable support? Currently all wiring draped over the floating ceiling with no support.
  3. Is there a clever way of working out lighting requirements in lumens using volume of the room and fittings outputs?

The manufacturer of the light fittings would give this information Apache, as a general rule you would be looking at anything between 100mm and 150mm. Contrary to popular belief LED fittings do produce some heat.
