what do you do if you have to upgrade the main earths but its in say an old wylex box ? They only seem to be able to take 10mm max at a push. I thought drilling a bigger hole in the bar but i doubt there is enough meat left to screw it down.

depending on board, its sometimes possible to remove a bolt holding earth bar down, slide a ring crimp under and tighten again
Why not fit an external earth block Search Page and take all the earths there. Then you only need one cable to the C/U.
get a pin crimp 16mm earth = @8mm pin - I keep a few specially for this problem, though usually end up changing the CU these days
Best not to mess with those crappy Wyex earth bars, buy a seperate 6 way one , not dear, and fix external. Or use an old Henley block.

Usually put main earth, main bonding and a bit of 10mm to the Wylex. The holes in the Wylex bar are not very big and most are doubled up.

if 2 terminals spare, might be possible to split 16mm, put 3 strands in 1 terminal and 4 in another?

Why a 16mm main earth?
are your Live & Neutral 25mm?
I am guessing if its still old wylex box, then L&n are only 16mm so isn't a 10mm still acceptable...
