Which online courses are these? I only know of the one run by NICEIC. If you're confident and can find your way around the book already why not have a look and see if a local college will let you sit the exam as an external candidate?

Correct for IR test. Don't forget to toggle switches for lighting. For continuity link L&E for each circuit at the CU. Test between L-E at lights & socket outlets, make sure you test on the switched live and again toggle switches, to prove polarity. Do you have to test the SWA? If so...
