    High Voltage

My voltage is usually around the 250V mark. For my recent NICEIC inspection I decided to fit a V-Phase VX1 optimiser as something for the chap to look at. He wasn't very impressed. However it does work as it reduces the voltage to 220V or by a maximum of 30V. So now I get between 220 and 225V...

To ensure you get a proper lethal shock if you touch something live while you are in contact with a pipe?

    insulation resistance testing bombshell

If you have RCBO's do you still do global tests? I find they tend to show a low IR if the live/neutral conductors are attached, but I am happy for the CPC to be "connected to the earthing arrangement". Thanks to the doctor for bringing this to our attention.

I vote for Binky who brought the Solar PV thread to life.

    New FiT rate

I think the Green Deal (mentioned in the Napit announcement ^^^) may yet save the day for the installers, but it may be a bleak winter until this is up to speed next year. Hopefully the rent a roof companies will have less of the market though, so better for the electricians who offer PV as a...

    Fixing brackets to slate roofs

Very interesting thread, I was keen to see how people are working with Slate roofs. Ref the transformer/transformerless thing. The transformer is to prevent any DC voltage getting onto the grid, so it is an issue for the DNO. The NICEIC course I went on (two weeks ago) took pains to emphasise...

    untidy/tidy

I like the building site look, but try and put everything back to habitable when the work is done. Sometimes I think half the day is spent looking for something I put down a moment ago...

I think common sense is a useful guide in these circumstances.

    To all those PV watchers

I've decided to take the plunge after a spot of watching. I think the number of installations are taking off, seen quite a few around this area, a bit anxious about it all with the start up costs, etc. but hope to start with a few friends and family an so forth to build a portfolio. Lots of...

    Japanese Akitas

My GF had an Akita, but it became very volatile, attacked other dogs (Pointer pup), and was clearly becoming a potential threat to people - Had to be put down before damage was done. Like other large dogs they will test their authority and if they think they are in charge...

    Assessment time again

A guide which is based on the regulaions. This is for your assessment so I think you need to be able to justify any variations from the guide yourself: "Earth conductor size is for conductors not buried or buried protected against corrosion / mechanical damage" - that is probably your escape...

    Assessment time again

Line conductor 16mm, gives Earthing conductor required as 16mm, and main protective conductor 10mm according to OSG table 4.1 (TNS/TNCS)

think my dog has a tic

Our pup managed to pick up a tick recently. We removed it with a tick removal tool and some fairly energetic dog wrestling. The tool is the green thing in the picture. The visible part of the tick was about the size of a chilli seed. Here...

    earthing

I would put N/A on the EIC as nothing to bond. The outputs from the boiler could be copper for the first couple of meters - could be worth bonding those?

    Interesting Chat with Building Control

The way I read it is that you have an "additional wet room on an existing building". Then from Part F Chapter 3.14 you can use purge ventilation (window) as per table 1.3 for each wet room with an external wall, install an openable window with no minimum size.

    Dodgy plugs

I once went to a store that was complaining the UPS had failed during a power cut. Examined the wiring and after speaking to the staff found that the tills were all ok during the power cut, only the servers in the back office were affected. Turned out they had rearranged the back office and...

    Intermittently Tripping RCD

Any Neighbours (with RCD protected installations) reporting anything similar problems. I've had a similar experience recently: One of the two RCD's tripping, no MCB's tripping, happens at night (between 11pm and 4am). Moved the Fridge and Freezer to another RCd, does not follow, ramp test...
