Interesting electrical related facts wanted.

OK, have you heard any interesting electrical facts people "might" find interesting if so this is where to post them facts, electricians pub ammo if you like.

I'll get things started.

1. Did you know cable ties used to be coated in rat poison to keep the rats from chewing cables. But was stopped because sparkys put the cable ties in there mouths and many got ill.(so I was told)

Every year in the UK alone the amount of electrical waste we dispose of amounts to 1.2 million tonnes which would be enough to fill the new Wembley stadium over 6 times.

This is increasing at an extremely fast rate of 5% every year.

er... 100w x 12 hours = 1.2KWH. 100w x 10 hours = 1KWH.

1926: The National Grid, first thought of in 1916, started to be built in this year - and was completed in 1937. The National Grid was set up to make electricity available all the time to as many people as possible and to make it cheaper.

 
1934: The first large scale power failure occurred in South East England - all the lights went out.

 
1950: Plastic covered wire became available. Before this cables were either cloth or rubber covered, both of which deteriorated with time and became dangerous.
