if its 1.5t&e its unlikly a diy job. They wouldn't waste the money over 1.0t&e.

...I've a customer where the main living room light is in speaker cable. Homeowner won't change it because they'd need to lift the carpet in the newly decorated bedroom above.

I've explained the risk, but to no avail.

It always feels great when a fault is found and rectified. You prove to yourself that you really do know what you're doing and that you're worth the money!

Issue a danger notice and suggest they get it fixed as they will not have any household insurance.

A very good point Ian, they're friends so everything has been informal so far.

I know they understand the risks, as they're intelligent folk, but at the end of the day, it's my @rse and reputation on the line!

I think the more intelligent they are the more dumb they seem to be when it comes to electrics thats what i find anyway.
