This is an interesting article on Universal Basic Income. There's a lot of interest in this around the world, but as most trials have been rather limited in nature, it's a little hard to evaluate the results. The Finnish exprmiment I was referring to earlier only targetted unemployed, net result was some increased economic activity, but a 27% reduction in mental health issues, which must have a cost benefit to the state, although no one seems to have evaluated that in money terms. To me, like we all try to do for our children, providing a stable platform from which to aspire is key to future earnings and success. We have all seen the results of children from chaotic families. Apply this to adults as well and that opens a whole new set of possibilites. One of things I have taken from the article is the possibiity of retraining as an adult. I looked at retraining into radiography, but simply could not afford to do that. I was fortunate in having received a good redundacy package from a previous employer that allowed me to retrain as an electrician and buy a van and tools. Few people have such luck, and I feel this is one thing that seriously restricts adults from being more economically active / productive in life.
